Figuring Out Where One Belongs In the FOSS community is a tough task

by david

Whether it’s translating from one language to another or fixing bugs, figuring out what to do and if it’s right for you is tough.

I’ve been using F/OSS software for 12 years and I still haven’t figured out where I belong. I’ve researched fixing bugs, but in all my research I’ve found nothing that makes it clear on how to get started and what steps to take from start to finish, and I sure don’t know any other language so I can’t do translations.

If I knew the process on fixing bugs, from setting up the environment in which to work in, to committing the bug fixes, I would write a howto and possibly set up and use a real life scenario using a sample program with a known bug for a quick hands on experience for the next guy to get familiar with the process.

I know PHP, MySQL and CSS, (though I’m not a GURU) but IMHO that isn’t very useful when it comes to giving back to the F/OSS cause.

All in all, I know loads of people that have contributed to F/OSS and have found their place, but for me, it’s just not happening no matter how hard I try.

Well Fantasy Football is Officially in progress. I had my draft Tuesday night and I ended up with a pretty good roster, but I’m still not confident it’s good enough. Here are my picks:

Ubuntu Hour

by david

Ubuntu Hour turned out great this evening. We didn’t have a chance to get down to the nitty gritty of too much I think because me and at least 1 other person was new to the scene.

I think that sort of threw things off a little, but it should get much better with time.

Zoobezi Bay

by david

We just got back from Zoobezi Bay. The kids had a blast, not to mentioned slightly cooked.
zoobezi bay

The kids and I went down so may slides today, I think I rubbed the skin off my butt cheeks. ;-) they also conned me into riding a roller coaster, the bumper cars, and 2 other rides that spun around until we almost hurled. Anyway, aside from getting conned all day, the trip was well worth it and I’ll definitely go back again.

Thanks to Tim for the link I gave this tool a test and my results were similar to his.

Finally for good measure my post titled “A Picture is worth a thousand words” claims to be in the style of:

Ah Wait! For good measure I copied an excerpt from a book by my favorite Author John Grisham and the result was:

I write like
Stephen King

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

Ha! Ha! That’s a funny one.

So I guess for me it’s a toss up between Corey Doctorow and David Foster Wallace.

Fresh install not such a disappointment

by david

Yesterday I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 in hopes I could get the youtube plugin for totem to work. Well it didn’t work. I was disappointed at first, but while I was configuring the rest of my system, I was browsing software and I bumped into an app called tuxguitar I thought oh well i’ll give it a try.

All I can say is AWESOME!!! Now I don’t need or want that youtube plugin anymore. I have no desire for it at all. Zilch, Zippo.

With tux guitar, I can now go to ultimateguitar.com and download Guitar Pro files. Guitar pro is a windows program that allows a musician to create scores, play scores, and also have the backing of the rest of the band along with the tablature, and when the scores are played back, the notes are highlighted as they are played.

This is an awesome feature for me, because I use tablature 100% of the time, and the problem with tablature is there is really no way you can get a feel for the timing of the song without listening to the original album and doing  this is very tough for me and almost next to impossible on some pieces, because I am hard of hearing and when listening to an original album with drums, bass, lead/rythm guitar and whatever else they might throw in, picking out 1 instrument and following it note for note is absolutely hard for me! Especially on pieces that are 220bpm!

But low and behold tuxguitar fixed all that for me and today I learned to play AC/DC’s TNT and Michael Jacksons Beat it in a couple hours, but if it wasn’t for tuxguitar It would’ve probably taken me about a year!

I even downloaded some Metallica songs I was having a hard time with for the past 10 years and got it down in less than an hour or so.

So I’m not at all disappointed and I look forward to future versions of tuxguitar .

By the way, the reason I wanted the youtube plugin to work so badly is because I use youtube constantly to watch other guitarist play my favorite songs and I play along with them to learn, but even this method is very hard and tedious.

Spent my weekend camping

by david

Friday we went to the campground because some friends at the campground called to tell us that some of the windows were broken out in our trailer. As soon as we got up there, we found that 5 windows had been broken with rocks.

My original plan was to drive up there and see what all I would have to do to fix the windows and go back another day to fix them, but once I got up there, I didn’t want to leave, so I drove back to Columbus, packed up everybody and took off for the weekend.

Saturday I got the windows fixed and then spend the day with the kids at the pool and we fished for a while and Sunday we got back in town sometime in the late afternoon.

Today I was so tired, I just spent my day playing Zelda on the Wii with my son Kyle and my daughters and I played some Mario Kart.

Ubuntu 10.04

by david

Today I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 on an extra computer that I mentioned in an earlier post. To refresh your memory the specs of the computer are:

Athlon (T) XP1800+ 1.53 GHz featuring QuantiSpeed Architecture

Advanced 266 MHz Front-Side Bus (FSB)Socket A

512 / PC2100 DDR

128 KB L1 Cache and

256 KB L2 Cache

Surprisingly It wouldn’t run. I had to give the install at least 3 tries before I got it to run. My first problem was I had to choose both noapic and acpi=off in the boot menu of the live CD to finally get the installation to start. Then durring the installation I decided to try ext4 instead, so I formated the disk for ext4 and started the install and went outside.

When I returned the install had failed at somewhere around 54% and I was forced to start all over, so I ran though the install once more choosing ext4, and again it failed at nearly the same place.

By this time, i’m starting to suspect a bad CD, so I tested the CD and everything seemed fine, so I did a memtest and everything seemed in tip top shape so I figured it was just a coincidence.

The 3rd around I got lazy and just chose ext3 and didn’t give it another thought and finally the installer finished.

Now I’m all excited to give this new toy a test drive, so I reboot, remove the installation cd and let the computer do it’s thing, here comes grub……..wait for it……blinking cursor on a black screen……..wait for it……. and finally I get…….. nothing but a blinking cursor Ah man! Reboot, reboot, reboot. Nothing, nothing nothing.

Now I’m just disgusted and give up and wonder why things have to be so difficult and not to mention how good this makes Microsoft look!

My Anniversary

by david

July 11, Will be my anniversary!

My Wife and I met when I was in the 10th grade and she was in the 8th grade. We stayed together all through my HS years and after I graduated we got married 1 month after in July.

Contrary to what everyone said, our marriage has been going strong for 18 years and I’m looking forward to another 100 years if it’s even possible to live that long. ;-)

Lebron goes to Miami Heat

by david

It’s official Lebron is now a member of the Miami Heat.

I have to admit I’m upset, but I guess he has to do what he believes is best for him. When I was growing up, I was always a Celtics fan and Larry Bird was my favorite player. But 7 years ago, I became a Cav’s fan when Lebron was drafted by them and took the NBA by storm. He averaged 29.1 PPG in the 2010 playoffs and averaged 28.4 PPG and 7.2 assists in the 2008-2009 regular season. He truly is a great player with a lot of potential.

So now I guess I’ll go back to my beloved Celtics. Here is a list of my favorite teams now

NFL: Cleveland Browns (2nd favorite Philadelphia Eagles)

NHL: Columbus Blue Jackets (Before my hometown of Columbus had an NHL team I was a Pittsburgh Penguins fan which I still am, only when they are not playing the Jackets)

NBA: Boston Celtics

MLB: Cleveland Indians
